THE OUTLAW POET AND THE CRAWFISH QUEEN: BILLY JOE SHAVER & YVETTE LANDRY
The late Texas singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver was a prolific composer who drew inspiration from his life experiences: turning horses to working in a sawmill; his relationship with religion and his family. All raw material for honing classic country songs, many of which are anthemic in the Outlaw Country music scene of yore. Then, the former Crawfish Queen of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, Yvette Landry, shares stories of coming to music and song-making later in life, and her work with the "Godfather of Swamp Pop," Warren Storm. Plus words and music from Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Marcia Ball and Fats Domino.
SAN ANTONIO SOUNDS
The great Texas river city is a mix of Mexican, German, Anglo and African American cultures, among others. Home to the Texas Conjunto Festival and the International Accordion Festival, San Antonio is best known for Tex-Mex or Tejano music played by squeeze box masters like Flaco Jimenez, Narciso Martinez and Mingo Saldivar among many. We'll speak with Flaco, who in collaborations with Doug Sahm, Ry Cooder, and Los Super Seven, has carried the music worldwide. "Chicano brown-eyed soul" performers like Sunny and the Sunliners and other groups describe music that connected New Orleans and Louisiana Swamp Pop with San Antonio and East Los Angeles. We'll also talk with Vox organ legend Augie Meyers who worked in the high hippie era with Doug Sahm as part of the Sir Douglas Quintet and later in the Texas Tornadoes. The conversation comes full circle with Max Baca, the leader and bajo sexto player of Los Texmaniacs who was influenced by both Flaco and Doug Sahm. The Grammy-winning family band sticks with tradition, but finds ways to include country, blues and rock. Plus music from Sam the Sham, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, Freddy Fender and Willie Nelson. ¡Vamos!

We also visit with a contemporary women's Jazz Manouche band from Quebec: Christine Tassan et les Imposteures. Plus music influenced by Django Reinhardt from Willie Nelson, Bob Wills, the Modern Jazz Quartet, and the Hot Club of Cowtown.

FELLOW TRAVELERS: MARGO PRICE, WILLIE NELSON & FRIENDS
We're on the road again, dialed into high-flying honky-tonk as we cruise through Texas cotton patches and Midwestern pastures of plenty. Starting off in Illinois farm country, we meet up with Margo Price, who followed her dreams of songwriting to Nashville, Tennessee. She put her name on the map with songs about growing up in rural America, and has since dug in her heels while singing about a landscape of gender and economic inequities. Then, we look in the rear view mirror to our 2000 in-studio performance and interview with Willie Nelson, who reminisces about his hometown of Abbott, Texas, and the "opera of voices" he heard in its fields. Plus, songs from Muhlenberg County, Butcher Hollow, New Orleans' 9th Ward, Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska and Hendrix's Both Sides of the Sky.
CREOLES AND COWGIRLS: CHARLIE GABRIEL & THE QUEBE SISTERS
We hit up Preservation Hall in the French Quarter for a potent dose of trad jazz, as bandleader and fourth-generation Creole musician Charlie Gabriel tells of his Caribbean roots, jazz funerals, and New Orleans' hybrid rhythms. Then we head to the Lonestar state to hear the reworking of jazz into Texas swing, as played by the Quebe Sisters. The fiddling siblings tell of their sheltered upbringing outside Ft. Worth and their fiery baptism into western swing. Plus, we spin other pioneering Creoles--Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, and Fats Domino--and country & western greats from Bob Wills to Willie Nelson.
BLUES OLD AND NEW: THE BLACK KEYS, ROBERT FINLEY & LUKE WINSLOW-KING
We trace the musical DNA and psychic aura of the blues from its Delta roots to Chicago's electric pioneers, across a patchwork of regional styles and modern day innovators. In an archival interview we talk with blues rockers the Black Keys of Akron, Ohio, about defying genre, eschewing nostalgia, and the blues progenitors who blurred labels like primitive and avant-garde. Age Don't Mean a Thing for 66-year-old Louisiana bluesman Robert Finley, who caught a big break in the last couple years and is now rocking the mic and hitting the road harder than ever. From Cadillac, Michigan to the Crescent City, Luke Winslow-King recalls the bad times and breakups that gave him a deeper understanding of the blues and inspired him to make I'm Glad Trouble Don't Last Always. Plus, we load up the jukebox with our favorites from Howlin' Wolf and Buddy Guy, Johnny Burnette and Buddy Holly, Willie Nelson and Bonnie Raitt.
VISIONS OF GENIUS: REMEMBERING RAY CHARLES
Ray Charles' unique vision blended the best of jazz and R&B, gospel and soul, country and pop into distinctive music that forever changed the American soundscape. This two hour American Routes special includes our exclusive interviews with Ray and those closest to him, tracing the radiant arc of his life and music. Voices include: Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler; saxophonist and bandleader, David "Fathead" Newman; singer and Raelette Mable John; Ray's chauffeur and assistant of more than forty years Vernon Troupe; his ex-wife and confidante Della Bea Robinson; and producer-engineer Terry Howard. Hear Ray's classics and the stories behind them, as well as his songs by Elvis, Percy Mayfield, Willie Nelson and others.

THE BEST OF AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE IN STUDIO AND ON STAGE
This holiday weekend, we've hand picked some of the best live performances on American Routes. From Willie Nelson in our studio to soul queen Irma Thomas and other roots music heroes at Rock N Bowl, Preservation Hall and the Civic Theater in New Orleans. We feature blues harpist Charlie Musselwhite, Baton Rouge blues pianist, Henry Gray, New Orleans traditional jazz clarinetist Dr. Michael White and Topsy Chapman. Plus the Cajun band Beausoleil and zydeco accordionist Geno Delafose. And, from the Smithsonian Folklife Festival: Los Texmaniacs and the Chuck Brown Go-Go band. So, turn on the radio and take a break from work (just two hours) for American Routes!
I DIDN'T LEARN THAT IN SCHOOL!
It's time to go back to school! Many of the lessons learned in school are valuable, but more often people carry their memories of great teachers, friends and growing up to think for themselves. Likewise, much of America's greatest music -- blues, jazz, country, Cajun -- was passed on informally from master players, in clubs, at jam sessions or dances. We'll visit two special professors who really believe in teaching the musical vernacular both formally and informally. Ray Charles shows kids how to play the blues at his Los Angeles studio, and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis tutors New Orleans high school students in jazz technique and appreciation. We'll also talk to the all-teen Cajun band from French Louisiana, Feufollet, about why they learned to play traditional music. Plus, tune in to children's songs and back-to-school anthems from Chuck Berry, Louis Armstrong, Willie Nelson and Aretha Franklin.
VISIONS OF GENIUS: REMEMBERING RAY CHARLES
