IT'S CARNIVAL TIME!

From New Orleans to southern France, Trinidad to Brazil, we celebrate Mardi Gras masquerading and dancing to the beat of Carnival music. We'll visit with Mardi Gras Indian Chief Monk Boudreaux as he suits up in handmade, feathered regalia and struts through the streets with his gang. Then we travel to southern France for the Carnival parade and music of Nice, and costumed revelry a few hours east in the wine country town of Limoux. Back home in French Louisiana, it's the Cajun Courir de Mardi Gras where beggar clowns dance for a chicken to put in a communal gumbo feast. Plus calypso, New Orleans brass bands and rhythm & blues classics to keep the krewe mamboing through the end of Fat Tuesday.

MEMORIAL DAY WITH THE NEA NATIONAL HERITAGE FELLOWS: MICHAEL WHITE, BEAUSOLEIL, MONK BOUDREAUX, DEL MCCOURY, KOKO TAYLOR AND MANY MORE...

American Routes celebrates Memorial Day weekend with a sonic feast from National Endowment for the Arts' Heritage Fellows--recipients of America's most prestigious award in folk & traditional arts. We'll hear music and conversation from past Fellows: bluegrass picker Del McCoury, rockabilly Wanda Jackson, sacred steel guitarists, the Campbell Brothers, and late blues singer Koko Taylor. The 2016 Fellows included: Mardi Gras Indian Chief Monk Boudreaux, Irish accordionist Billy McComiskey and Mexican-American singer Artemio Posadas. Other awardees range from basketmakers in Kentucky and the Penobscot tribe in Maine, to traditional wind instrumentalists from South Dakota and Laos.

CARNIVAL KNOWLEDGE: MONK BOUDREAUX, SOUTHERN FRANCE, CONEY ISLAND MERMAID PARADE

For our annual pre-Lenten bacchanal, we bring you classic Mardi Gras songs from the Crescent City and beyond. We travel to Nice, France - grand city on the Cote d'Azure - for a float parade that parodies American fast food assembly lines and French political scandals as stinky as local cheese; from there, on to the vintners village of Limoux, where free glasses of blanchette are never empty. We end our journey in Coney Island NY, where we hear of carnivalesque revelry at America's great amusement park by the sea and walk with the fishes in the Mermaid Parade. Finally, New Orleans' own Monk Boudreaux walks us through the sites and sounds of Mardi Gras Day. Big Chief of the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indian tribe, Boudreaux has sewed suits, performed music with the Wild Magnolias and masked on Mardi Gras for over 50 years.
