FROM THE SHOW: CARNIVAL KNOWLEDGE 2002: MARDI GRAS MASKS, MUSIC AND MISCHIEF

Emperor Ernie K-Doe, along with his wife, Queen Antoinette and the Duchess Tee-Eva preside over the Krewe du Vieux as it marches through the French Quarter. Hear Trombone Shorty and the Rebirth Brass Band step it off in this snapshot of Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

NEW ORLEANS NEW YEARS LIVE

It's time to celebrate the New Year with live music from the French Quarter including the Rebirth Brass Band, jazz with Leroy Jones and Ellis Marsalis, Little Freddie King's country blues, funk from Jon Cleary and songs from Charmaine Neville. Start the New Year right with American Routes.

RECORDING NEW ORLEANS: BASIN STREET RECORDS WITH JON CLEARY & KERMIT RUFFINS

New Orleans' own Basin Street Records is a homegrown record label featuring superstars of the local sound like the Rebirth Brass Band, Davell Crawford, Jason Marsalis and Kermit Ruffins. The label got its start with a live recording of Kermit's band at the Uptown club Tipitina's in 1997. Now, over two decades later and several Grammy Awards under its belt, Basin Street Records still holds true to the sounds of New Orleans. We talk with Basin Street founder Mark Samuels about the label's history. We listen in on the artists who call it home, including Jon Cleary, whose "Quarantini Sessions" streamed live from his Funk Headquarters in the 9th Ward and helped us get through these challenging times. Then, a live concert and conversation with Kermit Ruffins & the Barbecue Swingers from Esplanade Studios in the Historic Treme neighborhood of New Orleans.

BREAKING OUT: BRITISH BLUES TO NEW ORLEANS BOUNCE

From Great Britain to the Big Easy, we explore the sounds of musical and social breakouts. First, we hear how British blues pioneer John Mayall broke out of England with his band the Bluesbreakers, bringing British blues to a larger audience. We'll hear some of Mayall's sources and contemporaries, like Big Maceo and Eric Clapton. Then, it's butt shakes and backbeats with Big Freedia, the Queen Diva of New Orleans Bounce, a rhythmic dance music with sources in hip hop and rap, as well as much earlier jazz and R&B. We'll explore some of those sources, and strut with Kermit Ruffins and Sam Morgan, head "Down Yonder" with Smiley Lewis, and "Take it to the Street" with Rebirth Brass Band.

SUMMER'S LAST CHANCE TO DANCE: NEW ORLEANS LIVE

This Labor Day weekend we bring out the best from the clubs in New Orleans. Recorded during the 2012 New Orleans Jazz Fest weekends, this music is sure to get your barbeque hopping and your picnic popping. We'll visit Preservation Hall for songs and stories by Steve Earle and Tao Seeger, plus a special tribute to late New Orleans trumpeter John Brunious. Then we head over to the Howlin' Wolf for a late night set by the 2012 Grammy winning Rebirth Brass Band.

FIVE YEARS AFTER THE STORM

It has been five years since Hurricane Katrina and the failure of the Federal levee system in New Orleans, and we speak with local activists, musicians and residents to gauge the progress of recovery in the city and region. Rebirth Brass Band's Derrick Tabb talks about his after-school program "The Roots of Music;" we visit the Musician's Village in the 9th Ward to meet drummer Smokey Johnson; then head out into the bayous with blues guitarist Tab Benoit to talk about his work to save the wetlands. Also, conversation with Eric Overmyer and Lolis Eric Elie from HBO's "Treme," and commentary from New Orleanian James Carville on the importance of the culture of the city.

AFTER THE STORM IX: KATRINA'S SECOND ANNIVERSARY

Two years after levee failure submerged much of New Orleans, we walk through the streets of the city with an eye towards rebuilding and repopulating. Irma Thomas, the Soul Queen of New Orleans, leads us through the renovations of her once-devastated home and the recording of her Grammy-winning post-Katrina album. Join in the second line as we take you to a street parade with New Orleans' own James Andrews and members of the Rebirth Brass Band. Finally, celebrate on stage with the oldest-working New Orleans musician as trumpeter and retired tinsmith Lionel Ferbos makes 96!

AFTER THE STORM II: ALLONS A LAFAYETTE

This week on American Routes we continue to examine, through story and song, the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita while looking forward to the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans. Join us as guests Aaron Neville and the Frazier Brothers of the Rebirth Brass Band talk about their storm experiences and desire to remake the city. And we'll feature some live Cajun and zydeco from a benefit concert for displaced musicians in Lafayette, Louisiana.

CARNIVAL

It's that time of year again in New Orleans -- out come the beads, the king cakes, and the music! Our annual Carnival special includes a visit with the Rebirth Brass Band, a quintessential part of so many parades this time of year. Mardi Gras sounds and stories from Mobile, Alabama; their celebration is actually older than New Orleans! And of course all your favorite Carnival time tunes, in versions new and old.
