FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND: THE BEST OF AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE
This Labor Day weekend, it's the best of American Routes Live--studio concerts and conversation in collaboration with the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park--including the Pine Leaf Boys with Cajun tunes and dances, Haitian-American singer songwriter Leyla McCalla and her band, Creole banjoist and songman Don Vappie, New Orleans's king of the trumpet Kermit Ruffins, jazz saxophone modernist Donald Harrison and an acoustic set by Rickie Lee Jones.
RECORDING NEW ORLEANS: BASIN STREET RECORDS WITH JON CLEARY & KERMIT RUFFINS
New Orleans' own Basin Street Records is a homegrown record label featuring superstars of the local sound like the Rebirth Brass Band, Davell Crawford, Jason Marsalis and Kermit Ruffins. The label got its start with a live recording of Kermit's band at the Uptown club Tipitina's in 1997. Now, over two decades later and several Grammy Awards under its belt, Basin Street Records still holds true to the sounds of New Orleans. We talk with Basin Street founder Mark Samuels about the label's history. We listen in on the artists who call it home, including Jon Cleary, whose "Quarantini Sessions" streamed live from his Funk Headquarters in the 9th Ward and helped us get through these challenging times. Then, a live concert and conversation with Kermit Ruffins & the Barbecue Swingers from Esplanade Studios in the Historic Treme neighborhood of New Orleans.
BREAKING OUT: BRITISH BLUES TO NEW ORLEANS BOUNCE
From Great Britain to the Big Easy, we explore the sounds of musical and social breakouts. First, we hear how British blues pioneer John Mayall broke out of England with his band the Bluesbreakers, bringing British blues to a larger audience. We'll hear some of Mayall's sources and contemporaries, like Big Maceo and Eric Clapton. Then, it's butt shakes and backbeats with Big Freedia, the Queen Diva of New Orleans Bounce, a rhythmic dance music with sources in hip hop and rap, as well as much earlier jazz and R&B. We'll explore some of those sources, and strut with Kermit Ruffins and Sam Morgan, head "Down Yonder" with Smiley Lewis, and "Take it to the Street" with Rebirth Brass Band.

TROMBONE SHORTY... CASTS A LONG SHADOW
This week on American Routes, we're celebrating the life and music of Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews. Schooled in the sounds of his family and New Orleans' Treme neighborhood, Shorty has been a musician since the age of four. His natural prowess as a trombonist and trumpeter has carried Shorty from his roots in traditional jazz and popular tunes to funk and distinctively new New Orleans music as heard on the recent CD Parking Lot Symphony. We'll hear a classic concert, where he joins Kermit Ruffins upriver in St. Paul, MN... and then return to New Orleans where Troy takes the stage with his students from the Trombone Shorty Academy, as Andrews mentors the city's next generation of musicians.

AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE ON NEW YEAR'S
Ring in the new year with some of our favorite live music. We'll have a set from New Orleans' trumpet player, Kermit Ruffins with an all-star Crescent City band featuring vocalist Thais Clark. Lafayette, Louisiana's Pine Leaf Boys bring rock and roll energy to their own version of traditional Cajun music. Step into a holiday soiree of reels, jigs and waltzes by French fiddlers in Westbrook, Maine. And pull up a set for a club set from singer and banjo player Don Vappie and the Creole Jazz Serenaders. It's a festive set of live music that will keep you swinging well into 2012.

AMERICAN ROUTES 5TH ANNIVERSARY
It's been 5 years since American Routes first hit the airwaves, and we're celebrating! Hour 1 highlights include well-wishes from listeners, anniversary songs, and great conversations over the years with Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, the late Jerry Garcia, Norah Jones, Dolly Parton and Harry Shearer (of The Simpsons). Devoted fans will be amused by a look at our retro selves, and new listeners can hear how this all started! Hour 2 is our 5th Anniversary concert at the House of Blues, with New Orleans greats Irma Thomas, Frogman Henry, Kermit Ruffins and Henry Butler, and special guests Shemekia Copeland and Keb' Mo'.
LOUIS ARMSTRONG CELEBRATION
August 4 marks the 101st birthday of New Orleans' trumpet player and singer--and America's most important jazz musician--Louis Armstrong. In celebration of Satchmo's birthday, we speak with members of his All-Stars band, Joe Muranyi (clarinet) and Arvell Shaw (bass). On the ground in New Orleans, young trumpeters Nicholas Payton and Kermit Ruffins offer their perspectives on "Pops'" influence today. Also, a look at how the Marsalis family honored Armstrong's centennial, and music from collaborators King Oliver, Jimmie Rodgers, Bing Crosby and Billie Holiday.
