KEEP A COOL YULE
This Christmas, we're serving up holiday platters for the many moods and sonic flavors of the season. We get down to some very merry Chicano rockabilly from Los Straitjackets; gather around the fire with French fiddlers in snowy Maine; imbibe "Sugar Rum Cherry" concocted by Duke Ellington; dream of a white Christmas a la Booker T. & the MGs, and hear the tale of Miles Davis' "Blue X-mas" from jazz composer Bob Dorough. Plus, cool Yuletide exotica from Esquivel, joyous free jazz from Rahsaan Roland Kirk and ring shouting for a New Year from the Georgia Sea Island Singers.
A SONIC SEASON OF LIGHT & EVERGREENS
Our "Sonic Season" includes Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzza and Boxing Day. We celebrate with New Orleans Zion Harmonizers live in our studio. Woody Guthrie sings a Hanukkah song while Bob Dylan tells of "Three Angels." We interview a black Santa about his Christmas days in Vietnam, and Bob Dorough sings "Blue Xmas," the song he wrote for Miles Davis. Meanwhile, life in America goes on... in hopes and dreams that bring light to the darkness...
MAVIS STAPLES & BOB DOROUGH
Singer Mavis Staples grew up singing blues-inflected gospel with her family in Chicago, lead by her father Pops Staples' distinctive voice and guitar style. Their sound transcended the local scene, translating the message of the Civil Rights movement into song. We'll talk with Mavis about her 2010 release You Are Not Alone with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. Then, we'll sit in while jazz songsmith Bob Dorough spins stories of the 1950s jazz world and takes us back to Schoolhouse Rock to share his thoughts on the magical properties of the number 3.
